Truman Doctrine and Potsdam conference free essay sample

Both the Truman Doctrine and Potsdam Conference were rhetorical confrontations between communism and capitalism. The Truman Doctrine was an American foreign policy and the Potsdam conference was hostile meeting between the leaders of Britain, USA, and Russia. I think that the Truman Doctrine was the more important reason for the development of the Cold War. The Potsdam conference was held in July 1945 and was the second allied conference after the defeat of Germany. Roosevelt had died and had been replaced by Truman, who was aggressively anti-communist and Churchill had lost the 1945 election, Stalin being the only leader remaining the same. Harry Truman, the president of USA was much more suspicious of Stalin than his predecessor, Roosevelt. So, at Potsdam, the tensions below the surface at Yalta – about Eastern Europe and reparations came out into open disagreement as Truman and Atlee had different ideologies to the previous leaders. America had recently developed the atomic bomb and wanted to impose authority over the USSR, but Truman did not inform Stalin about this, leading Stalin to become furious as he had believed he had been tricked. We will write a custom essay sample on Truman Doctrine and Potsdam conference or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Britain and France were also not happy with the amount of reparation – they believed that a prosperous Germany was less likely to want another war than a weak one. Stalin had replaced the mixed communist and non-communist Polish government so that it was entirely communist. Truman was most angered by the fact that Stalin had replaced the mixed communist and non-communist Polish government so that it was entirely communist. As a result, this meeting was effectively where the problems started because Truman saw this act as posing a threat to capitalism towards the western side and the development of the atomic bomb angered Stalin as USA was effectively the superpower. However, the Truman Doctrine was more important because it was an indirect conflict between capitalism and communism during 1947. Communism had now spread into more countries in Eastern Europe and as a result it seems more important in that the Cold War had now developed into a competition between influencing countries with communism or capitalism. The USSR was expanding quickly – much to Britain and America’s distaste. The Truman Doctrine showed that America were committed to containment and that it was deeply keen to play the leading world role highlighting the role America was willing to play in global affairs, marking a reversal of the USA’s traditional policy of ‘isolationism’. It showed that that Truman was aggressively anti-communist; much more than the Potsdam conference. The aim of it was for USA to support any nation threatened by a communist takeover. For example the USA gave $400 million of aid to Turkey and Greece to try to stop communism spreading. A civil war had started in Greece in 1946 between the Western government and communists – Truman wanted to give the government all the help he could. The Truman doctrine showed the world that communism wasn’t the only option in order to regain a stable economic position and that democratic freedom had benefits too. At this point it became clear that the cold war had started. The two sides believed in totally different political ideas and each side feared the spread of the others idea. When one tried to expand it was seen as a threat to the other side. Essentially the Truman Doctrine was a more important reason for the development of the Cold War than the Potsdam conference because it increased further awareness of both superpowers (USSR and USA) different ideologies and showed Stalin that the spread of communism was not going to be an easy task.

How to Make Glass Using Your Grill

How to Make Glass Using Your Grill I know, I know... your grill is the cherished hearth-o-barbeque, but if you happen to have an old grill or a friend who has a grill but doesnt cook... or if you are a diehard pyro, you can make your own glass! How does this work? Well, you cant make just any glass in your grill. It needs to be glass that has a relatively low melting point, such as soda lime glass. This is glass made from grinding silicon dioxide (sand) with borax, washing soda or lime. Youre still going to need about 2000Â °F to make the glass, but if the ancients could do it, so can you. They would have used a fire with a bellows, but you can use a charcoal fire that is fed air using a vacuum cleaner. If you want to try this project, you can get details and watch the video of home glassmaking in action at Popular Sciences website, Popsci.com. Definitely watch the video. Its a spectacular demonstration, plus youll see why most people will choose to use their grill for steaks rather than making glass. Talk Local brand; regional success. BreadTalk Group Limited started out in 2000 as a local bakery chain best known for its signature floss buns, before firmly establishing its brand name and evolving into a major food retailer in less than 10 years. Given the sheer size of the consumer market in China, we believe that it will be the future catalyst for BreadTalks growth. While Singapore currently remains the largest revenue contributor to the Group, BreadTalks diverse brands of various food offerings and established foothold in Beijing and Shanghai should allow it to take advantage of rising disposable incomes as well as react quickly to new consumer trends in China. In terms of number of outlets, China already outnumbers Singapore with 20 food courts, 3 Carls Jr fast food restaurants, 3 RamenPlay restaurants and 184 bakery outlets. Rising costs, an issue, but manageable. We believe that BreadTalk will be able to maintain a gross profit margin of about 55%, which is in line with its margins over the past five years despite potential hike in food costs. Previous fluctuations in raw material prices had not resulted in any significant impact on gross profit margins, and the group also plans to improve its margins by shortening its supply chain and bulk sourcing globally for its supplies. Initiate with BUY and fair value estimate of S$0. 74. We project revenue growth of 26% YoY for FY2011F on the back of outlet expansions and stronger sales from existing stores. Pricing strategy of Southwest airline in the US Essay

Pricing strategy of Southwest airline in the US - Essay Example Due to intense competition from other competitors, Southwest airline should project its image carefully such that it differentiates its services from those of the competitors (Simmons, 2008). It should position itself as a point to point short haul carrier. The airline should offer separate check-in areas that offer snacks, drinks, internet access, nap rooms and even showers. While on board, a seat should be a flat bed seat that can recline to 180 degrees- parallel to the floor and one that can guarantee good sleep. The passengers should be served with menus with wide choices. More so, they should consider offering pre-order services where one can place an order before flying. Entertainment for elite business class should also be exceptional probably with a television fixed to the passenger seat or passenger offered with DVD players at will. In addition, passengers should be availed with internet access such that they can still transact businesses even when on board. Considering that everyone is cost sensitive, Southwest airlines should embrace a pricing strategy that offers competitive prices for its target market. It should not only compete with other airlines, but also with other forms of transport. For instance, a wealthy business executive may have a number of options such as either board a hired aircraft, top of range motor vehicle, or use the airline; all offering similar services, but ends up using the airline after considering the cost factor. However, the airline should ensure that it offers the facilities needed.

Banner depicts earthly life Essay Example for Free

Banner depicts earthly life Essay Artifacts which are found in burial shrines and in tombs are often rich with cultural and religious imagery. Not only are the types of artifacts which are selected to be enshrined within a given tomb of significance for inferring historical and cultural information, but the aesthetics evident in the individual items themselves can be studied in order to discover important cultural, religious, and historical information. Such is certainly the case regarding the silk funeral banner known as the name banner which was uncovered as part of the Mawangdui tomb of the Marquisite. This banner, which is shaped like a T depicts a Chinese astrological configuration of the cosmos (including the afterlife) which can be understood as being current in the Han Dynasty. The top of the T section of the banner shows heaven while the middle section of the banner depicts earthly life. One interesting aspect of the sectional representation is that certain figures travel through the sections. There are angels of heavenly entities who descend to carry Lady Dai to heaven. The images of the banner suggest a cosmos in constant motion, a dynamic interdimensional universe which is both physical and spiritual in nature. Also depicted on the silk banner are images if Lady Dais earthly family, who perform rituals for her safe-passage in the afterlife. The funeral banner indicates a culture which believed in both life-after-death adn in the efficacy of ritual and prayer. There is a graceful harmony present in the banner which suggests that Chinese culture at the time of the Han Dynasty had a vision of life and death which was seamless and that death was viewed as a continuation of life and life as a prelude to death. Viewed this way, the banner is an uplifting and spiritually exalting work of art, one which offers a dramatically different view of life and death than is prevalent in the Western world.

The Tale of Robin Hood Essay -- Analysis, Sherwood Forest

THESIS STATEMENT Although only slightly factual in historical setting, the legends of Robin Hood have captivated the imaginations of young and old alike through the charming stories concerning the characters of Sherwood Forest. PURPOSE STATEMENT Through critical analysis and research concerning the legends and characters surrounding Robin Hood, this paper will present the theme of social justice for the common man as purported by the Merry Men of Sherwood Forest. INTRODUCTION The tale of Robin Hood has evolved into one of the greatest legends of all time and has fascinated the minds of all who have heard about it. The stories surrounding Robin Hood and his adventures took place in the forests of Sherwood and Barnsdale dating back to the fifteenth century. The first question that comes to mind when dealing with this legend is who was the real Robin Hood? Amazingly, speculation regarding this question still exists today and the tale has survived more than seven hundred years. Now the real question has to be why is this â€Å"Robin Hood† such a fixating topic? Since there is such controversy over the real Robin Hood, for the most part he is a fictional character. He has now been adapted to a man of the movies where every director has a different vision of who he might have been. Their vision was usually of a heroic figure even though he could have more easily been considered a villain for what he did for a living. â€Å"†¦the image of Robin as a clever, lighthearted prankster gained strength. The tales in which he appeared as a highway robber and murderer were forgotten or rewritten† (Wickersham 12). It has a gotten to a point where now every child has a heroic vision of Robin Hood whereas the early ballads and oral tr... ...que. There is an explanation to why historians have obsessed over Robin Hood and it is not just to find out if there was a man who lived up to such surreal standards. He is a legend and loved by all for a reason and that is he was not afraid to stand up and fight for what he believed in. His message to the law and what we learn from his legend is clear. â€Å"It is a warning that injustice cannot be tolerated just because it is part of the system, for the anger which such injustice in the end awakens is unrestrained.† (Keen 218). Robin Hood lived motivated to fight against those he believed to be undeserving and in doing so he ended up standing up for the common man. This was his legacy in what he perceived as a noble quest for social justice. Real or imaginary, Robin Hood will continue to captivate the minds of all readers and his legend will never die.
